Askari Report 1200 UTC 13th December 2016

Position 16 40 N 34 19 W
Course 268 degrees
Speed 7.2 knots
Wind East North East 18 knots
Distance in last 24 hours 169 miles

The wind has eased over the last 24 hours but the swell is a little ugly; we have about 3 different swells and the motion is quite confused.

We just went through our first line squall just after mid-day and it was quite exciting but thankfully non eventful. The wind died as the squall line approached; I was monitoring it on the radar and learning how to use the target tracking tools while Andrew braved the elements!! The wind increased from 13 to 25 knots as it passed over, the then went from ENE to SE. We were sailing wing on wing so Andrew furled the main and turned Askari to maintain our course and keep the swell on the stern.

We are expecting reinforced trade winds of around 30knots in 48 hours and then a NW swell a few days later which will yuck - so today is a cooking day! We had those conditions most of the way across in our 37 foot boat last time, so whilst we aren't looking forward to it we will get prepared and embrace the challenge!

Askari Report 1200 UTC 12th December 2016

Position 17 24 N 31 28 W
Course 268 degrees
Speed 7.6 knots
Wind East North East 20-23 knots
Distance in last 24 hours 177 miles

Over the last 24 hours we have been getting used to stronger winds and bigger seas, but enjoying seeing the miles come down; with our record 24 hours distance. Askari seems to just stride out and all the while the waves are hitting the back quarter she just glides along taking the speed from the wave. We still have only had the smallest amount of water on the deck.

We lost one of favourite lures yesterday after we didn't hear the reel go and then guess a bigger fish or shark took it, as the wire trace was completely bitten through. We fished again and caught a small fish that we tried to return but it was hooked in too well, so we made it into ceviche with avocado salad and it was delish!

About 1,642 miles to go to Barbados and all is well, just a little bumpy out here - the wind alarm for 28 knots just went off……

Even in with the stronger wind we can sit and read out back

Ceviche salad - delicious

Amazing sunset again
