The trip from mistake harbour to Mount Desert Island was just glorious, again no wind but the skies were beautifully clear and the ocean gently rolled. As we approached Petite Manan Island where we saw one puffin before we spotted another and then another and then oh my goodness they were just everywhere. When we saw our first puffin we were elated but then to keep seeing them was just incredible. It was one of the best days - just a few glimpses of our puffins!!

Heading into Sommes Sound |
We approached Mount Desert Island, passing the Cranberry Islands and motored up Sommes Sound - this incredible inlet runs right up the centre of MDI, it's the most Fjord like waterway on the East Coast of the US. It was absolutely beautiful.....
On the way in we past by a few other harbours, amazing waterfront homes and had dolphins swim by too. The sound is very deep and the harbour at the end was, according to our guide book tight and full of moorings (not actually true), so we took a mooring at JB Williams.

Dolphins don't play much in the USA but there's lots of them! |

Askari in Sommes Sound |
I went ashore to see if we could buy milk n bread and met the really friendly people at the yard including Jamie and Jock - before we knew it we were given the 'yard truck' for the evening. This thing was huge and there was no way I was driving it but Andrew took on the challenge and we explored MDI and picked up some provisions. We were super excited to spot our friends on 'Mac' in the harbour so arranged a catch up. We hadn't seen them since the BVIs even though we were in Bermuda at the same time.

Sommes Village |
We spent a night in Sommes Sound and then moved down to South West Harbour. We quickly found this was a great spot to get on the bus route, found the fabulous lobster shack called Beales and got a national park pass to go walking in the Acadia National Park.
