Well it feels good to be at sea again and we are really excited about going somewhere new, even though I personally am a little apprehensive about this trip given it is along way, the wind is set to be variable and there is still the possibility of a front (mean wind) coming down from the East Coast of the US.
We had prepared to leave on Sunday, however we decided to have a relaxing day and leave on the same day as most of the other Salty Dawgs (with a little bit of encouragement from Linda….) Last night we had a leaving dinner at Nanny Cay and got to meet more of the Dawgs - it was a nice evening and not too late as we planned an early start.
We slipped lines at 7.20am and by 7.30am the fenders and lines were all away and we were gently sailing under the genoa down towards Sopers Hole and then out to Joost Van Dyke before we set the main too and turned a little more north with the wind at about 140 degrees. There was a bit of cloud around and it is very hot / humid but the ocean was beautiful.
Just before mid-day we set the spinnaker pole and pulled the genoa across to sail wing on wing. It's a little rolly as the swell is mainly from the east and the wind is more southerly, but we are comfortable and preparing for our first night at sea in many months.
On the AIS we spotted Destiny and Cinderella ahead of us and behind us Magic Dragon (Oyster 55), Geronimo and Ancestrial Salute behind us; we all appear to be following a similar course at the moment. We have heard a few of the other boats on the VHF but will check in with the first radio net later to get position reports and weather updates.
Only about 1,226 mile to go!
