Distance in 24 hours 162 miles

What a difference a day makes! Today we are in beautiful blue sky with light fluffy clouds, sailing on the wind but in a much calmer sea and Askari is just totally 'in the groove'. We had a lovely clear night with stars galore last night - such a treat after so many days of grey and squalls.

We are just so pleased with our sails on this trip, many forums talk about cruising sailors having no need for performance sails and I can only say I reckon on this trip alone the extra cost has been more than saved in fuel but most importantly comfort of having been able to sail so close to the wind - we never thought this possible out in the ocean. It's just a shame we have had an ugly counter current the last couple of days as we would have been breaking our records for distance if we were able to achieve our speed through the water.

We have been having a women's radio net and a couple of days ago I was excited to hear about a cake that could be cooked in 3 minutes - 3,2,1 cake recipe was to be announced. The 'ingredients' turned out to be two different cake mixes and water in the microwave for a minute, with some topping. It made me laugh as our American friends of course would use a mix for cake. Brits wouldn't dream of using a mix, as cake must be made from scratch to own it. And Aussie's don't eat cake; other than carrot cake of course with a macchiato….. I am getting excited about our time in the US, we may all speak the same language but there are so many differences, it's going to be great fun!

I've also been thinking it's amazing how you can get used to living life on an angle - I think I actually prefer it to downwind ocean roll as you can get wedged in. This starboard tack is also easy for cooking and showering as our fridge, cooker and shower are all on the port side of the boat. With the lee cloth set up in our aft cabin we have both slept back there the last couple of nights and as it has cooled off its really nice.

Talking of cooling down, I even had a sweatshirt on last night and the water temperature has already dropped 3 degrees - might need a wetsuit for diving in Bermuda!

217 miles to go - we should get in Saturday night if we can keep sailing at these speeds, especially now the current has eased off…..
