Askari Report 1200 Local Time 16 May 2017

Position 21 18 N 65 49 W
Course 347 degrees
Speed 5.8 knots
Wind South East 10-14 knots
Distance in 24 hours 161 miles

The wind held at 15 to 20 knots from East or South East until this morning when it eased off and we are now going the slowest ever….. well that's what it feels like as we are so used to Askari trucking along at over 7 knots. The sky is really overcast today and the humidity is stifling - it was so hot last night and it being our first night at sea, we both struggled a bit with sleep.

We had the sails wing on wing most of the afternoon yesterday but then as the wind came around more to the East in the late afternoon we switched the genoa to the Port side, leaving the pole out so Andrew was able to bring it back wing on wing early this morning while I was asleep. Having the pole set up like that works well and gives us a lot of flexibility in sail configuration; all manageable from the cockpit by one person.

The closest boats to us now are Cinderella, who we past during night, Ariana and Ancestrial Salute; some of the boats that are heading to Bermuda are now quite a way to the East of us the rest of the pack are all grouped around the rum line behind us, we think. We did leave earlier than many of them, however we did have a good run yesterday - many boats reported less wind than we had.

We have had quite a lot of shipping to deal with - at one point we had 4 ships within 10 miles. I had to call one cargo ship early this morning to ask him not to run into us - the radio operator was delightful and called me back after they went across our stern to wish us a safe trip. Then just now a super yacht cruised past at a distance of less than 1 mile on their way to Bermuda.

We are expecting the wind to be a bit more variable in the next 24 hours and perhaps we will get some squall action -oh joy!!

Only about 1,065 miles to go!
